 Sydneysiders have been flocking to the Blue Mountains since the 1920s, when holidaymakers drove up to Katoomba and Leura in their new cars.
Bushwalking was the main attraction but the new facilities – golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, theatres and bowling greens – were also a drawcard.
A classic mountain retreat, Rosa Mystica is a five-bedroom rendered bungalow with verandahs on two sides and a pretty garden. It was built during the 1920s, most likely as a holiday home for a wealthy Sydney family. Just a stone’s throw from the village of Leura, with its antique and gift shops, boutiques and fine restaurants, Rosa Mystica is perfect for a group of friends or a family looking for luxurious accommodation with warmth and charm.
The five bedrooms contain two king-size beds (which separate to become singles), a queen-size bed, double bed and two single beds. Period details such as a 1920s-style chaise lounge, antique French polished wardrobe and dressing table and slow-combustion fire, adds charm to the main bedroom. Other bedrooms feature period lamps and plush fabrics and one has an ensuite. Another bathroom has a claw-foot bath and separate shower.
Deep reds and gold feature in the formal parlour, with its chandelier, open gas fire, comfortable lounge furniture and TV/DVD/CD facilities. Guests will find everything they need in the well-equipped kitchen. The dining room, which easily accommodates 12 and has a slow combustion fire.
During spring and summer guests sit under the cherry blossoms with a coffee and the weekend papers, or fire up the barbeque for a long, lazy lunch.
Rosa Mystica is less than two hours drive from Sydney and has off-street parking for six cars. Several bushwalks start just a short stroll from the cottage.
